Geographical Institute „Jovan Cvijić“ of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts participates in the „Glac – Pannonia Project“, led by the Archaeological Institute from Belgrade and the Department of Classics and Ancient History, The University of Sydney.

The subject of research is the archaeological site „Glac“ close to the town of Sremska Mitrovica, with the remnants of the Roman imperial palace, founded by the emperor Maximianus Herculius at the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th century AD. The aim of the project is to identify settlement patterns, to reconstruct paleo-landscapes and to study various aspects related to the environment during the periods of Antiquity and Late Antiquity. The task of the Geographical Institute team is to process and analyse the spatial data following the CSIRO methodology, which includes production of geomorphological and geographical maps in three different scales, including the soil and vegetation data, as well as the preparation of the written interpretation of geomorphological history of this area.
